The Mystery of the
Mansion
There
was once two girls. Their names were Katie Lukerchow, and Lucy Cattin. They
were best friends, and they lived in a town called Oakville in Michigan. Katie
was blond with brown eyes, she was very strong and tall for her age, and Lucy
was brown haired with green eyes, and she was a full six inches shorter than
Katie, but much more flexible. One day they made a remarkable discovery, but I
am spoiling the story. Let me tell it correctly…
“Hi, Katie!” Lucy
called. Katie turned around from the book she was reading and got up to greet
her friend. “Hello, Lucy!” Lucy walked up to Katie and smacked her on the back.
Katie grunted, but smiled. “So, what do you want to do today?” Lucy asked.
Katie shrugged. “Hey,” Lucy said. “I have a great idea!” Katie tilted her head.
“What?” she asked. “How about we go to the lake and go swimming!” “But, well,
we did that yesterday.” Katie said. “So?” Lucy asked. “Come on! Let’s go,
Katie! It’s so sunny out, we should be outside!” Katie shook her head. “How
about we explore the old mansion?” she asked. Lucy immediately raised an
eyebrow. “Really? It’s abandoned, Katie. I don’t know how old it is, but by the
looks of it, it’s pretty old.” Lucy said. Katie grinned. “Exactly! Come on,
Lucy! Please?” she said. Lucy swayed
back and forth. “Oh—alright!” she growled. Katie gave her a bear-sized hug.
“Come on, I’ll ride my scooter and you can ride my bike.” She said. They went
to her garage and grabbed their sports stuff. They then set out. They came upon
the old mansion and was it ever big! It was black, and looked really abandoned. “Wow.” Katie breathed.
“Alright, you saw it, now can we go!?” Lucy persisted. Katie shook her head. “Not
until I find out what is in this mansion. Come on, Lucy. It’ll be fun! I mean
it! Look, there is no one in here and there is mainly old dusty furniture. Come on!” Katie urged Lucy. Lucy shook
her head. “Ugh. I don’t know what you are getting me into, Katie. But- well-
okay. I’ll come with you.” Lucy finally agreed. Katie squealed, then she
grabbed her friends hand and pulled her through the door. They looked around. “Eww.
Just look at this carpet!” Lucy said. Katie looked down and then she opened a
door. Out came a several small moth balls. Katie gasped. She hated bugs with a
really deep passion. They decided to
leave that part of the old house and go upstairs. There they found a small bedroom.
It was simple, just a bed and a dresser and a closet. Katie sat on the bed, but
Lucy stood as straight as a soldier. But suddenly Katie screamed. “AAAH!!!” she
shouted. Lucy spun around. “WHAT?!” she shouted. “I’m sinking!” Katie
responded, and Lucy realized that indeed she was sinking. Then they heard a voice.
“Go…” It seemed to whisper. Lucy and
Katie clutched each other. “RUN!!!!!!!!” Lucy screamed but the door was blocked
by something on the outside. A loud banging started to happen. “HELP!” they
both shouted. They shouted that word until they were hoarse and Lucy tried
breaking the door down, but it was no use. “We’re trapped. Oh, we are trapped!
Katie! I totally blame you for this!” Lucy shouted. Katie stood up. “Me? I was
simply curious, if you had come up with a better idea perhaps we wouldn’t be
here!” but she stopped. She remembered what her teacher had told her. Mrs.
Cloney had said “ Proverbs 15:1 says that ‘A soft answer turns
away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.’ We want to watch what we say, so
we can avoid needless fights.” Katie took a deep breath. “Okay, we can figure
this out. We have to figure out 1. What caused the bed to sink. 2. Who was
talking. And 3. How did we suddenly just get locked in. Okay?” Lucy nodded. But
then they heard that voice again. “Go…”
it whispered. Katie sucked in her breath. “I know exactly what happened.” she
said. Lucy raised one eyebrow. “What?” she asked. “It all has to do with the
wind.” Katie said. “That voice we heard was just the wind! Sometimes, the wind
sounds like it talks to us, like little whistling sounds. That was what
happened. The door became suddenly locked because the wind must have blown
something in our way! The wind also made the banging sound because it was
blowing against the shutters! So eventually the wind will blow some more and
get the thing out of our way, but I don’t know what was with the bed.” Katie
said, but then she noticed Lucy was grinning. “I know what happened. Look!” she
said pointing to the thing in her hand. “This mansion cannot possibly be that
old. This is a remote for the bed! You know, the kind where you can adjust the
softness! You must have sat on it and accidentally triggered the soften button!”
she explained. “Exactly!” Katie exclaimed. But then another big gust of wind
came rattling through the house. There was a sharp cracking sound and the door
suddenly swung open. “We’re free!” Katie shouted and they both bounded out of
the house happily. Their friendship was saved, they were saved, and they had
both learned an important lesson. When going into a strange old house, always
bring a rock, so if need be you can break down the house.
